(from Dark Roasted Blend)

I've met a lot of women recently who seem really proud of the fact that they don't know how to cook.

I find this interesting since there's never been as many cooking shows available to watch...I mean, there's a whole channel dedicated to it.
Cooking really only requires the ability to read and comprehend what you've read, and then follow the directions.

It's not rocket science.

Maybe it's because so many women don't want to be perceived as "house-wifey", or they want to appear too career oriented for that sort of thing.

When I was single...I rarely ever cooked, but I never saw it as something that I couldn't do.
I just didn't do it because it seemed a waste of time to do it for one person...especially a person who was perfectly happy with a sandwich.

Most of the women I've run across recently who proudly state that they can't cook are married, and some with children.
Now, perhaps their husbands do most of the cooking...or most of the food their families consume is processed, or frozen and shoved in a microwave or oven.

It would certainly explain why so many children can't recognize fresh vegetables.

It's always been puzzling to me why someone wouldn't cook fresh food, since it's pretty quick and easy...as you can see on The Food Network.

It's just something that I've noticed recently, and I find it ironic...what with all the programs on TV, and all the talk about organic food and the like.

...as a side note, The Mister and me know a West Indian family in which, miraculously, astoundingly, astonishingly...not one woman in that family can cook.

We always cringe when we're invited over for dinner, and I always marvel at the amount of inedible food that is served. Dishwater Callaloo, dry macaroni pie, little sandwiches with unidentifiable pink and green goo...really...I also sigh, because I look forward to dinner at someone else's house because that means I catch a break. Not so when we go there.
We're always starving when we leave....

It's just wrong...

Wealthy Teen Nearly Experiences Consequence.

The 4 Boneheaded Biases of Stupid Voters

I saw Bryan Caplan interviewed this morning on Canada AM.

He says that if you aren't schooled on the issues and policies of the candidates, you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

He likens it to doing surgery without training, or flying a plane without lessons.

...and while he makes excellent points about ignorance at the polls ruining the economy by putting the wrong people in office...he's so fucking superior, and arrogant that it pisses me off that I agree with him.

I hate that.

BTW, I notice that Jack's come out guns a-blazing.
It's kind of sad... it's like Willy Wonka is heading the NDP.

Today's Great Find

If Ersi Arvizu was dark haired, I'd be looking at my favourite stepmother Nada's doppelgänger.

Anyone who had a heart...

Warwick/Bacharach...the songs of my early childhood

"Worried that welfare costs are rising as the number of taxpayers declines, state Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, said Tuesday he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied."

It's shocking when people say these sorts of things out loud.

But, in my business...I've seen plenty of people who have no business having children.
I would be lying to you if I told you that it didn't cross my mind while dealing with that mother who has never spoken to me without dilated pupils, or that mentally ill mother who is dragging her child through life with her, or that mother who puts your number on call privacy because she doesn't want to come and pick up her sick child, or the mother who calls and threatens you because she suspects you called Children's Aid because her child hasn't been bathed, or changed her clothes in two weeks, and has big bruises on her back, or the mother who...you get the picture.

...and while it doesn't have anything to do with being poor, none of the women mentioned above was working their way through school, or gainfully employed.

I'm not saying he's right.
I'm just saying it's crossed my mind when I see women who have no business being parents having multiple children.

That's right.
I said it.

While it's not popular with a lot of people who have a romanticized image or belief in human nature...Judges have been doing it.

Oh, C'mon.

I wonder if you can throw them in the washing machine...I'd like to see that at the laundromat.

According to a new study, vegetarians and vegans are six times more likely to suffer from brain shrinkage than meat eaters.

Well, that explains everything, then....now I'll feel sorry for PETA members instead of making fun of them.

The internets is mean

"In spring of third grade, Mary was walking James and Claire home from James’s school when he demanded a lottery ticket. She refused to buy him one. “He started to scream and yell and rant and rave on a busy corner. We were crossing the street and the light was changing. Coming down 75th Street I saw this big white Hummer. James said to me as we were crossing the street, ‘If you won’t buy me a lottery ticket, I don’t want to live.’ He stood in the middle of the street and he faced the Hummer down. And the Hummer pulls over and the guy gets out and starts screaming.” At the psychiatrist’s office the next day, “James is speaking really fast and he’s mounting my leg like he’s in sexual overdrive,” Mary recalled. Pressured speech and hypersexuality are symptoms of mania. Shortly thereafter, when James was 8, his condition was diagnosed as bipolar disorder."

This article is incredible.

Parenting is hard business at the best of times...but, being terrorized in your home by the child that you love, must be torture.

The decisions a parent is forced to make for the family, for the child, and for their own sanity is unimaginable by the average person.

Just, wow.

What is this?

America Ferrera is in some sort of costume, no?
Because if she isn't...she clearly has no friends, and the people who work for her are mocking her.

Actors and Politics

"...In the film, McGowan plays a key IRA operative, and McGowan's own father was Irish. Driving from Dublin to Belfast, she remembers finding the sight of Union Jacks, "so deeply offensive."

She added, "And it was interesting, I had a British makeup artist [on set], and she had red hair and pale skin. I said, 'Oh, are you Irish,' and she said, 'Oh God, no.'" That shocked McGowan, she said. And while arguing that violence doesn't solve anything, McGowan said she understands the reasons behind it."

You know, I always find it funny when an actor does a movie and then thinks they totally understand a political situation and speaks out, with some inane, superficial "insights".

That last paragraph is particularly funny to me.
Since Rose can talk smack, but when her make up artist takes offense at being mistaken for something she's not...Rose is offended.

Everyone wants to be a freedom fighter...whatever that is.

Satirical PSA on racism shows sexism, a hate on for white people is A-Ok.

"Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. A man walks into an elevator… And a White woman clutches her purse a little closer, presumably because he’s Black and, therefore, feeds off the idea of change. While the concept of the video — breaking the third wall to address the audience about an oft-unnoticed, everyday example of racism — could be pretty effective, we’re too distracted and concerned by another form of hate farting in the corner of this elevator, hoping you don’t notice:

“Stupid White bitch.”

…Really? You’re going to address hatred of one group at the expense of another marginalized group and bolster a pervading stereotype in order to detract from your message for the sake of a cheap laugh?"

While Amnesty International is out there in the world wasting energy so that women are not bartered like chattel....back home, one woman goes retro a couple of centuries to sell her virginity to the highest bidder.

For sale: a rare one-of-a-kind item. Can only be used once. No refunds. And returns are impossible.

That's not quite the message being put up on the Internet by a 22-year-old student in San Diego, but the intent is the same. What is the woman selling over the worldwide web to the highest bidder? Her most prized possession: her virginity.

On Friday night, Mama came to spend the night.
We watched a Serbian movie, and in the background of one scenes the song "Kafu mi draga izpeci" (link to the original) was playing. The two of us sang the song until the end, and Mama couldn't stop laughing because I remembered all the words to a T.

I posted the original above, (as if you care...) but the guy below is the way I usually heard it sung. Drunk and sentimental Serbs at weddings and zabavas:

Toronto Police identified the man shot and dumped from a car along Hwy. 401 yesterday.

Dayne Rose, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Keele St.

Const. Tony Vella said homicide detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the 2:45 p.m. Shooting to come forward. Police have yet to release a description of the shooter or anyone else that may have been in the car, a champagne-coloured Lexus. The shooting closed down the busy highway at the height of rush-hour and kept it closed until almost midnight.

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence collected at the scene and at the Armel Ct. housing complex where the suspect car was found on fire.

Holy Cow!
Are we in a Guy Ritchie film now?

Scorned Women

Asylum has a slide show of photographs showing women's revenge.

I zeroed in on this one because she has a myspace page under the name of Jane Doe....and then I was led to a radio station site where you can hear Jane's whole story in three podcasts, so I'm assuming that they interviewed her at some point.

I dunno.
We all deal with things differently, and I certainly understand her pain.
Cheating husband, who not only cheats, but cheats with your best friend.
...the billboard, the myspace page, the radio podcasts,...I dunno, it's a little overkill for me...there's such a thing as making an attempt to move on.

What is up with people who hover over your shoulder when you're paying by debit.
Fuck right off...okay?

Rocketalk's post "Last Call" made me think of something that happened a long, long time ago.

When I was in my early twenties, just before I went back to school, I worked in a daycare centre.

There was one young single mom who used to bend my ear. Every time she picked up her daughter, she engaged me in conversation about the various dramas that were unfolding in her life. I knew she was troubled, and so did all of my co-workers.

Everyone that worked there would find something to do as soon as they saw her walk in because no one wanted to be sucked into 30 minutes of therapy with her.
One evening, I was the only one left and was in a hurry to catch the bus for my hour long trip home. If I missed that 6.10pm bus, I'd have to wait another 20 minutes to catch the next one. I just wanted to go home.
She walked in at 5.58pm and started to engage me in conversation about how she was having trouble coping with things, and how depressed she was.

I cut her off and told her that I had to get going.

All I could think about was not missing that bus...and she still had to gather her things together and sort her child out, and I had to do my walk through, and lock up.

The next day, I came to work to find out that she had jumped off of her eighth floor balcony.
The police had to break down the door to get her daughter.

I always wonder what would have happened if I had have missed my 6.10 bus and just listened to her.
